In today’s market, it is relatively easy to find competent builders who have put together instruments with excellent tonewoods, impressive craftsmanship and detail oriented finish work … really good sounding guitars. You have to dig quite a bit deeper to unearth a really inspired creation like this guitar by Sergei de Jonge!
Let’s back up a bit though. As much as sound and playability are everything, let’s admit it … the first impression we have of a guitar as we open the case or see it hanging on a store wall is the looks. Looks? Well this one certainly has more than its fair share! Of course the Bearclaw figured Engelmann top with spalted maple soundhole rosette framed by intensely quilted Bubinga binding catches your eye immediately … as does the bookmatched peghead veneer with sapwood highlights! It is when you turn this guitar over that you get the full visual impact! This has to be by far the nicest set of Zircote I have ever seen … the DEEP chocolate brown hue is just riddled with dramatic dark “rio” grain pattern and both the sides and back have matching sapwood highlights! Once again Mr. de Jonge has redefined the word “exotic”!
The real question is … how does Zircote affect the sound of this stunning looking guitar? This Central American hardwood is slightly denser than even Brazilian rosewood, so intuitively I would tend to attribute the beautiful point on the attack transient, the overall sonic precision and the iridescent overtone series to this relatively rare tonewood. So where does the exceptionally sweet upper midrange quality come from? To what do you attribute the immediacy of response, the tremendous dynamic range and the extremely appealing general overall sonority? Of course you attribute it to the builder … Sergei de Jonge!!!
