Comments The Kay instrument company made many, many instruments from the late 1930’s. This Kay Pro Electric from 1952 is in excellent condition and is a good example of what was available just before solidbody guitars really took off. Kay instruments were widely used by many top pop popular artists, from jazz great Barney Kessel to Andrew McMahon in Howlin’ Wolf’s band.

Neck Maple neck with bound Brazilian rosewood fingerboard, mother of pearl block markers. Brazilian rosewood headplate with Kay logo.
Frets This instrument was professionally refretted at some point and the frets are in excellent condition.
Body Sealed flame maple body, single cutaway.
Finish Original ‘natural’ nitrocellulose lacquer finish in good condition.
Hardware/electronics Mostly original hardware and electronics; pickups as a pair are RW/RP so the middle position is humbucking. The tuners have been professionally replaced with Kluson-style nickel plated units.
Playability/Action This plays well, with the action currently at 7/64ths bass and 6/64ths treble.
