2003 Gibson SJ 200 Standard (consignment) SOLD

Comments The Gibson SJ 200 is one of the iconic steel string flat top guitars. Introduced in 1937, it was an immediate hit. While it’s a fairly large guitar – according to the 1938 Gibson catalog, the SJ designation stands for Super Jumbo, after all – it’s actually quite comfortable to play.Tonally, it’s very even, and can be rather loud with great projection. You can hear the Gibson SJ 200 on many recordings – and it’s a pretty safe bet that you have; it’s been on tunes from artists as diverse as Rev. Gary Davis, Emmylou Harris, Jimmy Page, George Harrison, Gene Autry, Elvis Presley, Gram Parsons, Porter Wagoner, Pete Townsend, and countless others. The Everly Brothers used SJ 200s until Gibson created the slightly smaller J-185 for them.

For many players, the Gibson SJ 200 was a plain statement that you’d arrived.

This example, built in early 2003 at Gibson’s Bozeman, Montana acoustic shop, is a good illustration of the modern Gibson SJ 200 Standard. In good condition, it features a spruce top, flame maple back and sides, maple neck with bound headstock and rosewood fingerboard, and the instantly recognisable ‘moustache’ bridge and hand-painted pickguard. There is some wear on the pickguard paint, but otherwise the instrument is very clean.
