Originally from France, James Trussart now works in the Los Angeles area building unique instruments with unusual materials and finishes.
The James Trussart Satin Black Deluxe Steelcaster is reminiscent of the Fender Telecaster Thinkline, with the distinctive body and headstock shapes, hollow body with one F-hole, and the longer pickguard.
However, the Deluxe Steelcaster features Trussart’s exclusive steel body and metal parts, and a maple neck with rosewood fingerboard and a recessed metal headplate matching the body, and pinstriped finish. The neck also features the standard 25-1/2 inch scale length, 1-5/8 inch wide nut and a 9 inch fingerboard radius.
For weight and looks the back and parts of the top are made of perforated steel. The pickups include a TV Jones Magna’Tron and an Arcane Pickups / Trussart single coil, wired with master volume and tone controls, and a three-position pickup selector. The tuners are TonePros Kluson Deluxe models, and a cutaway vintage style bridge with brass saddles is used.
Aside from its very cool looks, this is a great guitar to play. The pickups are clear and bright yet hot enough to get lots of edge. The fretwork is clean and accurate, with Dunlop 6105 wire giving plenty of traction. The control layout is a little bit wider than the original guitar design, which makes the switch slightly more accessible when moving it out of the treble position. And it sounds great acoustically!
