Godin A4 Ultra Fretless Bass

The Godin A4 Ultra Fretless Bass – the A4 U ltra is also available as fretted and as the A5 in a 5-string fretted version – is another great instrument from Robert Godin.

Godin products get a lot of attention worldwide, because Godin provides a high-quality, extremely verstatile instrument at a reasonable price. And they show up in places you might not expect. Recently, Tony Bennett and Lady Gaga performed in Brussels, Belgium and were acoompanied by Gray Sargent playing a Godin 5th Avenue Kingpin archtop! The Godin Multiac series is extremely popular with solo performers.

Featuring a chambered Silver maple body with a spruce top, a rock maple neck with either an ebony (on the fretless models) or rosewood (on the fretted models), the Godin A4 Ultra Fretless Bass offers a very wide range of tonal possibilities. The bridge is ebony with a pin design, very unusual for an electric bass! The fretless neck uses two sets of position markers; the edge of the fingerboard is notched and filled at each fret location, so it’s very easy to tell where the notes are. Additionally, standard dot position markers are used.

The chambered maple/spruce design of this bass adds greatly to the acoustic bass simulation. Three outputs are available – there is a saddle based transducer pickup and a Lace Sensor passive electric pickup, each with its own jack. In addtion, a 13-pin Synth connector is between them. Two sets of controls are installed – the electric pickup has side-mounted volume and tone controls and the distinctive Godin EQ is next to the bass side of the fingerboard.

The Godin A4 Ultra Fretless Bass plays very well. It’s a full size, 34-inch scale instrument, with a very comfortable neck. The body is also full size and this helps it develop the richness and bottom end of an acoustic bass, but without the propensity for feedback at stage volumes.
