L.R. Baggs Venue DI
If you are a gigging acoustic guitar player then chances are you have used a direct input of some kind. Often you will also need a tuner, some kind of EQ and a clean solo boost would be nice to hear your self over those pesky drums and electric instruments. Enter the L.R. Baggs Venue DI. The folks at L.R. Baggs were surely reading my mental wish list when they came up with this one. This sleek looking piece of gear starts with our long time favourite ParAcoustic DI and adds all of the features I just mentioned and more.
There is a powerful and responsive 5 band EQ section which features low and high midrange boost and cut controls with frequency ranges from 100Hz -500Hz in the lows and 500Hz -2.8kHz in the highs. The usual 1/4 instrument input is present along with XLR and line out. The Garrett Null anti-feedback is quite effective and easy to use. Simply sweep the knob slowly from left to right and when you hear the feedback starting and when the knob reaches the problem frequency the feedback stops. The tuner lights up bright and is very easy to see on stage and features a tuner/mute foot switch. There is also a series effects loop for those of us that like to run a few more effects on our acoustics.
My favourite feature is the clean solo boost ( hey wait isn’t that ever guitar players favourite part!) which is very impressive. A second gain control on the back of the unit allows you to set your boost from 0db to 9db louder and then engage it with the foot switch. This can be very useful for either taking a solo break in a band setting or just putting a little more emphasis on a certain part with out changing your right hand attack. Unlike some other boosts I have hear this one truly stays very clean all the way up to the loudest setting. Wow.. all these great features in a portable piece of gear and it comes with a cool carrying case!
