❌SOLD❌ Hiwatt DR-103 100w Tube Amplifier Head, 1974

Brand:

One of the key elements in the sound of the 1960’s ‘British Invasion’ was the sound of Hiwatt amplifiers designed by David Reeves, with the 100 watt DR-103 head the cornerstone of the line.

Known for clarity, reliability, durability and VOLUME, Hiwatt amps were seen on the stages of major touring artists like The Who, Moody Blues, Pink Floyd and the Rolling Stones.

Here, we are looking at a Hiwatt DR-103 100 watt head in good, largely original condition.  It was built at Kingston, Surrey in 1974 and initialed by Harry Joyce, who was hired by David Reeves as one of the few who met his rigid quality standards . One tube socket has been replaced, and it has JJ power tubes. This amplifier has been serviced by Brandon Montgomery at Bludotone Amps. Physically, it is in good shape with smaller wear to the Tolex covering. The two original Partridge transformers are in place and working well.

These amplifiers are not feature heavy. They have Normal and Brilliant channels, channel volumes, then master Bass, Middle, Treble and Presence controls, and finally a Master Volume. No effects loops or channel switching are used; Hiwatts just produce a great sound with plenty of volume.

Construction is very well done, and reflects the disciplined backgrounds of the original designers and builders. The wiring is point to point on durable turret boards – no printed circuts – and the housing is marine grade plywood.
