Fender Precision Bass Black Refinish, 1959

Fender Precision Bass Black Refinish, 1959

This vintage Fender Precision Bass built during 1959. It’s been used as intended and has played countless shows around Ontario, Canada – attested to by the stickers on the original tweed case. Somewhere in the dim and distant past, the alder body’s original finish was removed and a black finish was applied. The refinish itself has an amount of honest play wear. The neck is the standard one-piece Maple Fender design, and its finish is original, with the smooth wear and patina that only comes from decades of use.

SOLD!!! Gibson Les Paul Standard 59 Reissue Cherry Burst, 1992

SOLD!!! Gibson Les Paul Standard 59 Reissue Cherry Burst, 1992

One of the iconic American guitars, the 1959 Gibson Les Paul Standard was ahead of its time – it was not popular when it was originally produced but is very highly prized now. The classic single cutaway, arched flame maple top is perfectly suited to the shaded sunburst finish. In 1992, before establishing its Custom Shop, Gibson produced a series of Les Paul Standard reissues, re-creations of the 1959 production. These guitars predate the ‘R’ series reissues. This very nice ’59 reissue bears a mix of 1959 and 1960 specs – a 1960 style cherry sunburst, knobs and neck profile that’s a bit thinner than a 50’s model, and 50’s style dished-carve top.

SOLD!!! Les Paul Standard Double Cutaway Limited 'Ocean Water' Blue, 2016

The nicely flamed top of the Les Paul Standard Double Cut uses a translucent, ‘Ocean Water’ blue finish that’s almost turquoise. The rest of the body and neck are a dark, midnight blue that’s nearly opaque. Hardware is chrome, including Grover locking tuners that make restringing a breeze, tune-o-matic bridge and stop tailpiece. The pickups are open-coil zebra humbuckers with a simplified wiring scheme – pickup selector, master volume and master tone. Schaller Strap-Locks are installed.

Michael A Lewis ‘Le Petite Rougette’ Archtop Guitar Red, 2009

Michael A Lewis 'Le Petite Rougette' Archtop Guitar Red, 2009

Michael A Lewis builds very high quality archtop guitars and mandolins in his Grass Valley, California workshop. For a time, Lewis built authorized replicas of D’Angelico instruments though this arrangement has come to an end. He builds largely to order, though some instruments are available from stock. Built for the 2009 Montreal Guitar Show as part of the ‘Red Collection’, this Michael A Lewis ‘Le Petite Rougette’ archtop is an excellent illustration of Lewis’s skill. Fully acoustic with an Bartolini jazz pickup mounted to the fingerboard and pickup, this guitar is in excellent condition.

SOLD!!! Gibson ES-175 Archtop Electric Guitar Sunburst, 1962

SOLD!!! Gibson ES-175 Archtop Electric Guitar Sunburst, 1962

The Gibson ES-175 was immediately popular with jazz players. The body is constructed as a single florentine (sharp) cutaway, using maple laminates for feedback rejection. This was becoming increasingly important as audience sizes increased, requiring higher stage volumes that are seriously problematic for hollow body instruments. These work so well that eventually, an ES-175 built not long after this one wound up on some of the world’s largest rock stages in the hands of ‘Yes’ guitarist Steve Howe.

Linda Manzer Cutaway Steel String Guitar Natural 1980

Linda Manzer Cutaway Steel String Guitar Natural 1980

Here we are looking at a Linda Manzer cutaway steel string acoustic built during 1980 in Toronto. It features a concert body using Sitka Spruce top with Indian Rosewood for the back, sides and headplate, Mahogany for the neck and Ebony for the bridge and bound fingerboard. The nut and saddle are bone. Schaller tuning machines with ebony buttons are installed at the head, and a K&K pickup set has been installed to an endpin jack. This example features Abalone for the rosette and position markers – a mix of dots and a leaflet with stem. The top has a small thin clear plastic tap plate, an excellent idea that protects the top without hiding it.
