Here we’re looking at a just-post WW2, Gibson SJ Slope Shouldered Dreadnought Sunburst, 1946 built in Kalamazoo, Michigan. Introduced in 1942, the Gibson SJ has stayed in production to the present day though sometimes with name changes, including the ‘Country Western’ name.

The Gibson J-45 Slope Shouldered dreadnought, or Jumbo, was introduced in 1942 to replace the J-35, which had been built since 1936. It has remained in production ever since, and its rich warm tones make it a great match with a singer. Its basic finish has from introduction been a Sunburst top with darker stained back, sides and neck.

Introduced in 1954, the Gibson J-160E flat top electric turned out to be one of the more successful of Gibson’s slope-shouldered dreadnoughts. Intended as a companion to the then-new Les Paul solidbody, the Gibson J-160E was one of the first mass production electrified steel string guitars. This model was discontinued in 1979, and is occasionally re-issued.

The Gibson J-15 was introduced in 2014 by the Acoustic shop in Bozeman, Montana and is still in production. Based on the classic and very successful slope-shouldered dreadnought body used for the J-45 and J-50, the Gibson J-15 pairs a Sitka Spruce top with Black Walnut for the sides and back, and has a Maple neck with Indian Rosewood for the bridge and unbound fingerboard.
