Gibson Country Western Model Natural, 1957 ( No Longer Available)

The Gibson Country Western Model debuted in 1955 as a miracle of rebranding – it is the classic Gibson SJ-N, Southern Jumbo Natural, with a new label! The SJ-N appeared in 1942, became the Country Western in 1955,  was again renamed the SJ-N in 1960,  and  finally dubbed the SJ Country Western in 1962.   The model was discontinued in 1977. The Gibson Country Western model, like the SJ-N, pairs a Sitka Spruce top with Mahogany for the sides, back, body blocks and neck.

❌SOLD❌ Gibson Country Western SJN Acoustic, 1957

The Gibson Country Western began its life as the SJN, or Southern Jumbo Natural finish, in 1956 and was quickly renamed. The SJ itself first appeared in 1942 and replaced the J-55 built from 1939 to 1942. As one might suspect, this model was targeted towards the Southern American States, especially those south of the Mason-Dixon line.

❌SOLD❌ Gibson SJN Country Western Dreadnought Steel String Guitar, 1964

The Gibson SJN appeared in 1956 as a natural top version of the successful Southern Jumbo, and had the model name ‘Country Western’. In 1962, square shoulders arrived, and the name was lengthened to ‘SJN Country Western’. The model was discontinued in 1978. This example dates to 1964, with the square shoulders and three-point pickguard. The top is Spruce, with mahogany for the back, sides and fingerboard, with Rosewood for the fingerboard and adjustable bridge.

❌SOLD❌ Gibson Country Western Model Steel String Guitar, 1957

The Gibson Country Western Model made its debut in 1956 as a miracle of rebranding – it is the classic Gibson SJ-N, Southern Jumbo Natural, with a new label! Until 1964, this model – like other Gibson dreadnoughts – was a round shoulder design. At that point, it’s likely that market pressures like the popularity of the Martin style changed the shape to square shoulders.

❌NO LONGER AVAILABLE❌ Gibson Country Western Model SJ Natural, 1956

This Gibson Country Western was built during the model’s first year, and is in good playing order. It has had some repairs – it is 62 years old, after all – including some cleated top cracks and over-sprayed finish. The tuners have been replaced with new vintage-style models, and work well. As is typical, the pickguard is lifting a bit. Under the bridge, a sub-plate has been added to the bridge plate due to normal wear. The top is spruce, the back, sides and neck are mahogany, and the fingerboard and bridge are rosewood. The fingerboard is bound and has dual-parallellogram position markers, as an ‘upgrade’ from more basic models like th J-45.
