Leo Fender’s Precision Bass had a profound and overwhelming effect on the way music has been presented. The ‘Precision’ name refers to the ease of precise intonation, not always the case with fretless acoustic basses. Most bassists rapidly shifted to using fretted electric basses. With better tuning and much greater portability, the P-Bass was an instant hit.

As with all other Fender models, and Fender Precision Bass there have been a number of variations on the Precision Bass formula. The earliest models used a single-coil pickup and a Telecaster-style headstock. By 1956, the larger headstock appeared with a better contoured body, and most importantly, a split pickup wired to cancel hum. At the end of the 1950’s, Fender decided to add a Rosewood fingerboard to the lineup, and it took several years to sort out the production methods for this.

Here, we have a very nicely preserved Fender Precision Bass, with a neck stamp reading 5 OCT 1966 C. This bass appears to be in largely original condition, even with the pickup and bridge covers and finger rest. There is some belt buckle wear on the back, but otherwise the finish is in very good condition considering its age. It’s lost some of its gloss and gained a soft patina. The decal is in very good condition – often these dried out and flaked. The plating is mostly worn off the volume control knob, but the tone knob didn’t seem to get quite as much use.

This Fender Precision Bass plays well, and its frets and fingerboard are in good shape.

The original hard shell case is included.
