National Reso-phonic has offered metal body Tricone models for 25 years. The Steel body ‘NRP’ and brass body ‘Style 1’ Tricone models have lovely sweet trebles with lush overtones and a note played on a Tricone seems to sustain forever. It is easy to see why these instruments were the first choice of professional Hawaiian style players in the late 20s and 30s.

However, what metal body Tricones don’t have is a powerful bass.

The mahogany body National Reso-Phonic M-1 Tricone retains the lush complex trebles of the National Style 1 but the wood body changes the character of the bass response: in short, the bass is huge! The fulsome bass notes sustain beautifully; to me the best of both worlds — clear trebles, great sustain plus excellent note separation in the bass range.

To my ears, this makes the M1 Mahogany Tricone an ideal candidate for squareneck players. We have routinely special-ordered this model in squareneck-version since the M1 was introduced at the 2012 January Namm show.

Blues players who play slide, lap steel or Weissenborn styles will instantly take to the M1 tricone Mahogany. But I encourage Bluegrass Dobro/squareneck players to try these guitars; I keep one on hand tuned to GBDGBD Bluegrass tuning at all times.

For Bluegrass style, the M-1 tricone squareneck offers huge volume. And a fuller, clearer, tighter bass response than a typical ‘spider bridge’ squareneck.
