G.W. Barry Concert Cutaway

The recent proliferation of side ports on handmade guitars is easy to understand.  Luthiers incorporate them into their designs because they work!  But ... and it is a big BUT, not all side ports are made equal.  Some builders seem to be able to realize a dramatic improvement in volume from these apertures and others ... not so much so!

It's easy to test.  Just put your left hand over the port,  strum the open strings with your right hand and then immediately remove the hand that was covering the port.  When I perform that test on this stunning G.W. Barry Concert Cutaway,  the already powerful response increases dramatically!

When I asked Mr. Barry about sound ports in general,  his response was insightful. "The side port feature, as expected, imparts a monitoring factor for the player but surprisingly adds to the overall volume and tonality of the instrument ... possibly by moving air more rapidly thus allowing the top to move more freely."  There is no doubt in my mind that Gordon is able to coax a much more dramatic improvement from this recent innovation than most other builders!

G.W. Barry has been pushing the sonic boundaries of guitar building for almost thirty years now ... fabricating exquisitely designed musical tools from his very impressive stash of premium tone woods.  This particular Concert Cutaway is a case in point, with its absolutely incredible Sitka spruce top ... evenly spaced grain count,  honey-like patina and overwhelming display of medullar rays ... one of the most perfect examples of this species that I've seen!  And did you catch the set of Indian rosewood?  Left click on the large image at the very top of this page to rotate the guitar and view this Master Grade set of rosewood with its razor-sharp grain definition and rich ox-blood hue offset by Gordon's own proprietary marquetry and European maple binding.

Of course all of the side ports & quality tone woods in the world will not not guarantee the kind of results we hear from this instrument.   As always,  you need an experienced luthier with the broad skill set required to excel in a marketplace that is saturated with choices.  Once again G.W. Barry has demonstrated his remarkable intuitive sensitivity with regards to wood selection and graceful design detail ... and produced an instrument with an authoritative multi-layered voice that is very simply a joy to play and listen to!
