Blackwell Double Top Classical

Blackwell Classic Double Top

Today's feature is a double top classic from B.C. builder Martin Blackwell. Having studied traditional spanish hand building techniques with noted luthier Michael Dunn, Blackwells yearly production is limited to a small number of beautifully hand crafted guitars. This instrument features Indian rosewood sides and back, Engelmann spruce/cedar double top with Blood wood body binding and a side port.

The double top consists of a honeycomb fiber sandwiched between two very thin soundboards. This relatively new construction technique reduces weight but retains the necessary stiffness and results in a powerful and responsive guitar with great dynamics. In order to produce a traditional sense of tonality Blackwell guitars are braced similar to a traditional classical with a variation on fan bracing.

The side port has a monitoring function for the player and allows you to hear more of what the audience usually enjoys. In addition to this the overall volume and tone is accentuated by moving more air rapidly and allowing the top to move more freely.

These features create an instrument with excellent overall projection and sustain with beautiful evenness and note separation. Top it all off with a eye catching Blood wood body binding and you have visually and tonally stunning guitar!
