| It is almost ironic that the luthier who has
so many prominent flatpicking recording artists playing his instruments,
builds one of the nicest fingerstyle guitars I've ever heard! Every
time we get one of these DBJ models in our store, and I mean EVERY
time, it invariably gets singled out by our customers as "the best
fingerstyle guitar I've ever played!"
I was so excited when we received this latest
DBJ Cutaway that I contacted Dana himself and asked him what the thought
process was when conceiving this particular model. "In designing the DBJC,
I wanted to develop a big guitar with a powerful, yet balanced voice for
a serious fingerstyle player with a light to medium touch. I started with
a large top, having a round, mechanically efficient lower bout capable
of generating power and volume. Balance is difficult to achieve in large
guitars, but absolutely critical to fingerstyle players. To address this
issue, the DBJC employs medium-depth sides, several subtle bracing modifications,
and an approach to voicing that differs from our other models. The cedar
top provides a quick attack, ringing highs and long sustain; Indian rosewood
is used on the back and sides for warmth and fullness of tone. I completed
the package with fingerstyle-friendly string dimensions of a 1 3/4" nut
and 2 5/16" bridge spacing."
In fact, my own impression of virtually
every example of the DBJ that I have played, reinforces Dana's assessment.
This guitar not only has an openness and immediacy of response that would
satisfy the most demanding player, but an overall warmth and profound
presence that simply crushes most other fingerstyle instruments! |
