| Anyone into roots and old
time music in Canada is already familiar with Chris Coole and Jayme Stone.
Both have toured and recorded exhaustively in these idioms for over a decade
and are well respected for their technical proficiency and musical inventiveness
... so when Ian Molesworth from Woodhall Music approached us with these
two new instructional DVDs we were quite excited to get involved!
Woodhall Music DVDs feature high-quality, multi-camera
video-work which clearly shows all of the details of left and right-hand
action. Their mandate is to offer expert instruction, drawing on the great
wealth of roots artists and teachers with the goal of bringing these artists
into your home for intimate one-on-one music lessons!
On this latest release from Woodhall Music, banjoist
Chris Coole, presents an in-depth exploration of his own trademark style
of clawhammer banjo-playing. Through a series of exercises and well-chosen
traditional tunes, Chris takes an approach which allows the student, through
the building of a musical vocabulary, to learn to speak “the language of
music”. To this end, Chris demonstrates the three main right-hand techniques
that define the style, ensuring that the student develops the all-important
skills of tone, speed and timing. Right-hand techniques demonstrated include:
the Basic Strum, Double-thumbing and Drop-thumbing as well as the Roll.
This is indispensable information for true beginners, as well as more advanced
players looking to hone their technique.
| Chris demonstrates the above techniques with the following
classic tunes:
Black-Eyed Susie G Tuning
The Barlow Knife G Tuning
Shady Grove G Modal Tuning
Salt River G Modal Tuning
Old Molly Hare Double C Tuning |
At age seventeen, Chris Coole discovered the banjo
- and today is one of the finest exponents of the clawhammer style on the
North American music scene. He tours and teaches widely and to-date has
released many fine albums of traditional tunes with collaborators Arnie
Naiman (banjo) and Erynn Marshall (fiddle). Apart from his own recordings,
he is the sideman of choice on albums by many of Canada’s most respected
musicians, which include Sylvia Tyson, Jim Cuddy (Blue Rodeo) and Jenny
Whitely.
“Chris Coole plays some of the cleanest, most melodically fluid and
inspiring clawhammer one could hear.” Banjo Newsletter
Banjoist Jayme Stone takes a new approach to teaching
of the 5 String Banjo on this instructional DVD from Woodhall Music. Beginning
with the subtle, yet powerful basics of posture and right and left hand
technique, Jayme proceeds to detail rolls, slides, hammer-on and pull-offs.
This is indispensable information for those picking up a banjo for the
first time and equally useful for more advanced players who want to hone
their technique.
| Jayme teaches exercises as well as popular tunes including:
Cluck Old Hen- with drones and pinches
You Are My Sunshine- with simple rolls and slides and
Sally Gooden- combining picking styles. |
Jayme Stone is a rarity! A masterful banjoist, educator and
a true musician’s
musician. He has been a devoted student of music in all it’s forms,
studying with the likes of banjo elders Bela Fleck, Tony Trischka and Bill
Evans as well as jazz musicians Bill Frisell and Dave Douglas.
Teaching and touring across the country, Jayme plays with the roots/jazz
band Tricycle and the Jayme Stone Quartet.
FRETS MAGAZINE said of Jayme- “Imagine a more chilled out Bela Fleck
and the Americana side of Bill Frisell and you’re on track…”
“...an intent focus on all aspects of music… one of the most open-minded
banjoists around.” Banjo Newsletter
“Bridging jazz, bluegrass and everything in between ,with smart compositions,
playful jams and a great sense of purpose.” CBC Radio
