Gibson 50th Anniversary 1958 Les Paul Standard Murphy-Aged

It's difficult to fathom, with 50 years of hindsight, that the Les Paul Standard wasn't an instant classic upon its launch in 1958. When Gibson showed the world how smoothly traditional craftsmanship could be applied to a solidbody guitar with the first incarnation of the Les Paul in 1952, the results inspired equal measures of applause and mystification. The guitar won some converts, but was no runaway success. A quick succession of advances in the design ... namely the addition of a Tune-o-matic bridge in 1955 & humbucking pickups in 1957 ... culminated in the most sublime of cosmetic features, the Cherry Sunburst finish applied to a carved maple top, officially added for the first time as a standard production feature in 1958. The guitar forever after known as the Les Paul Standard was born!

To commemorate the 50th Anniversary of the introduction of the Cherry Sunburst Les Paul Standard, the Gibson Custom Shop has produced a very limited run of these exquisite instruments with features that include custom wound Burstbucker pickups, CTS pots, bumblebee tone capacitors, '50s rounded neck contour, period correct body binding, long tenon neck joint and thin nitro lacquer finish that has been aged by the maestro himself ... Tom Murphy!

Gibson has certainly made more than its share of vintage reissue guitars over the decades but I can tell you this ... THIS particular instrument is not only by far the nicest feeling & sounding Les Paul reissue I have EVER played ... it is the nicest Les Paul I've played period ... INCLUDING the original issue 1960 that we owned for years!!! Check out Richard Smyth playing this guitar in the audio clip below!
