Gibson ES 335 Figured Top
Wine Red & Beale Street Blue

I chose these guitars for the shop while visiting Gibson's Custom Shop in Memphis a couple weeks back (if you haven't read the article yet, click here for details). Despite the countless guitars displayed all around me, these 2 beauties grabbed my attention instantly. Both guitars feature stunning figuring that seems to glow out from under their translucent nitro finishes. At first, I tried to choose just one of the two, but I found myself strangely unable to separate the guitars from each other... they look so good together I just had to bring them both back to Toronto!

Now that they are both here, it's only a matter of time before they each find a new home. So, I'm giving them one last chance to share the spotlight together. Here they are: ES 335 Wine Red and Beale St Blue!

I couldn't possibly pick a favorite of the pair (you have to love all your children equally, right?), but that doesn't mean the two guitars are the same! The ES 335 in Wine Red is definitely the more elegant and classy of the two. We've all been drooling over red 335s for years, but the Wine Red finish is a little more subtle than the standard Cherry finish we usually see. The slightly darker tone of the finish accentuates the depth of the figuring, making the natural wood grain shine through.

The ES 335 in Beale Street Blue has the looks to catch your eye, and the sound to demand your attention. The spectacular figuring creates a 3 dimensional appearance that shifts with the light; this guitar is just begging to be drenched in stage light! The flashy finish is balanced nicely by the otherwise classic design and sound of the 335; all the warmth, sustain, and sugar sweet midrange comes through in spades. This guitar is perfect for anyone who loves the sound and feel of timeless design, but also wants a guitar with a little more edge

Neither the Wine Red or Beale Street Blue finishes are part of regular production; they are available as special order only. For the moment, these guitars are simply two of a kind. Fingers crossed, maybe we can convince Gibson to build us a few more in the future. The ES 335 is without a doubt one of the best guitar designs in history, and these are two of the nicest I've seen.
