| Ren Ferguson was given the daunting task of establishing
a new Gibson acoustic guitar plant in 1979, basically from scratch since
most of the original tooling was lost or destroyed. One of the first creations
was an entirely new model: the Songwriter Guitar.
This model was the first guitar out of the Bozeman
factory to return to the legendary “Advanced Bracing” for the huge bass
we expect from the Advanced Jumbo Gibsons of the Pre-War era. The
Songwriter eventually evolved into the guitar we now see as the Songwriter
Deluxe.
The Songwriter Deluxe is part of the Gibson Modern
Classic Square Shoulder Series and built in the spirit of the famous square
shoulder guitars such as the Dove and Hummingbird. Though this instrument
is not a “historic” model, it incorporates many decorative features
taken from Historical Gibson guitars going back to Pre-war and even to
the Orville Gibson days. The bridge design, fretboard inlay, pickguard,
nitro lacquer and multiple binding, all come from various Gibson models
to give this guitar the aura of a historical model.
Ren has also added some nice touches of his own
to the Songwriter deluxe, such as a hide glue dovetail neck joint and the
Modern Classic neck with its rolled fingerboard edges and almost "electric
guitar" feeling contour ... something most players feel instantly at home
on. |
