| William Laskin is of course renowned for his
dramatic inlay work with its imaginative themes, wide-ranging materials
use and intricately executed engraving detail. He is also the
originator of the acoustic guitar armrest bevel that he has implemented
on almost all of his instruments since 1989 ... a much copied innovation
that this gifted luthier has generously shared with the guitar building
community. In my opinion, Mr. Laskin's work has had,
and will have for decades to come, a very real impact on the evolution
of guitar building.
We are lucky to take delivery of one Laskin guitar
per year and it is always an event at our store. Not just the sales
people, but all of the repair techs and other local instrument builders
come in to see "this year's Laskin". The reaction to our William
Laskin guitar for 2008 has been unanimous!
Of course we all were blown away by the tasteful
minimalism of the "Sunset Canoe" inlay motif. I'm not sure
if I have ever in my life seen a nicer Sitka spruce top or a higher quality
set of Brazilian rosewood. Pick the instrument up, rest it in your
lap and you wonder why all guitars don't have the Laskin armrest.
The funny thing is though, as soon as you play this guitar,
all of the physical details of this instrument are totally forgotten.
You instantly realize why William Laskin has gained the reputation of one
of the world's finest luthiers of his generation. This man builds
some of the best sounding steel string guitars ever made ... by anyone
at any time! |
