It is one thing to see a nice photograph
in a magazine or on a website, and another to actually have the instrument
in your hands and inspect it with a critical eye. To start with,
this instrument makes a great initial impression when you open the gorgeous
Ameritage hardshell case, see the built-in case humidifier,
the digital hygrometer and the two extra intonation compensated bone saddles
(providing different action heights) as well as detailed literature that
addresses humidity and general guitar care issues. Before I've even
touched the instrument I already know that these folks are serious!
Having been involved in guitar building
for a good part of my life, I know the likely spots to look for signs
that the building process was rushed ... slight tear-out from a purfling
route, finish puckering around the bridge, excess glue on internal
struts ... that sort of thing. Well, there is certainly NONE
of that on this instrument! The fit and finish on this McPherson
is as crisp and clean as anything I have ever seen! It is absolutely
pristine & perfect!
As you might expect from an instrument that has
utilized completely unique construction techniques ... this McPherson guitar
has an equally unique sound and feel. The first thing I noticed
about this Model MG 4.5XP is the fact that it is physically heavier
than some high-end flattops ... sometimes a sign that an instrument has
been "over built", often having a negative impact on sound.
After playing this instrument though, you realize that it is extremely
open & responsive with all of the overtone nuances and dynamic complexities
you expect from a professional level guitar. So where does the weight
come from? Possibly from the absolutely gorgeous cast plate that
is part of the ingenious neck attachment system. Not satisfied to
just bolt the neck on like other companies, McPherson has a cast
plate that provides optimum structural integrity and a neck-to-body
joint that will not absorb even a small percentage of vibration or energy!
With all great guitars, all thoughts
of looks, construction techniques and craftsmanship are totally forgotten
the instant you start playing. This guitar was set up perfectly,
so playability issues were not a factor (other than wishing that all guitars
played this effortlessly right from the builder). It all of course,
comes down to sound. I can see this instrument becoming the
go-to guitar for a longtime player who has owned many different high-end
guitars ... simply because the exquisite Carpathian Red spruce top,
stunning Macassar ebony back & sides and McPherson's proprietary construction
techniques have combined to produce a unique & totally engaging sonic
fingerprint! |
