National Ukelele
The Hawaiian Ukelele has a long and rich history dating back to the late 1800's when the Portugese came to that island to work the sugar cane fields.  Legend has it that the native Hawaiians were impressed with the sound of the Portugese braguinha ... from which ultimately the ukelele evolved.  Another story indicates that the instrument was initially called "ukeke lele" or dancing ukeke ... the ukeke being the Hawaiian three stringed musical bow.

The Panama-Pacific International Exposition of 1915 in San Francisco showcased the ukelele in the Hawaiian Pavilion,  where over 17 million people heard musicians such as Jonah Kumalae and the Royal Queen Quartette.  This new musical idiom centered around this charming new instrument,  subsequently swept the country!
