So why mahogany?
Here we have a company with ALL sorts of tonewood options ... rosewoods
from Indian, Brazil or Madagascar ... figured maples, three
different grades of koa, Cocobolo from Africa even! So why
plain old mahogany? You guessed it. We are committed
to the wonderful TONE of this tropical hardwood!!! In the hands of
a talented luthier and in combination with an equally worthy top plate,
mahogany can serve up a tantalizingly tasty tankard of pure sonic satisfaction!!!
OK, OK ... enough of the hype already!
Lets get down to the facts. Why mahogany? While this
wood doesn't have all of the lower midrange thickness of rosewood,
it more than makes up for it with it's superb sound velocity, overtone
coloration and overall woody tonality. Add a relatively aggressive
attack transient to this immediacy of response and organic sonority and
you will start to "get" why mahogany has a lot of fans and a growing number
of converts!
Did you catch the quality of the Engelmann
on this instrument? This is my absolute IDEAL Engelmann cut ... moderate
grain count with lots of "cross flower" and no grain runoff!!! This
tonewood is typically harvested from smaller trees than Sitka and more
often than not the wood exhibits some spiral grain characteristics,
making a bookmatched top with no grain runoff quite rare. While Engelmann
often has just slightly less note fundamental than Sitka, it produces
a noticeably broader overtone series and is especially responsive to a
light to medium right hand attack. Throw in the R. Taylor "Modified
X" bracing to slightly enhance the low end and you have a very powerful
and responsive guitar indeed!!!
