Taylor Custom Grand Auditorium

Taylor Custom GA
When our own Mike Gray was in California at the Taylor factory in August,  we decided to take Taylor's Build-to-Order concept one step further and have Mike actually choose the wood for a couple of custom guitars while he was there!

The first instrument that has arrived from that project is this gorgeous sounding  Custom Grand Auditorium that features a stunning "sinker" Redwood top,  bone nut & saddle,  gloss peghead overlay,  upgraded Gotoh 510 tuners,  and one of the nicest sets of Indian rosewood that I've seen in quite some time!

So what is sinker Redwood?  It is typically a term to describe large first growth redwood logs that have been salvaged from the bottom of rivers after laying there for over a hundred years!  Often,  sinker Redwood is dramatically coloured from mineral deposits.  It also possesses an enhanced strength-to-weight ratio which is typically attributed to the increased saline levels resulting from prolonged submersion in water!

.
It is this improved stiffness that gives sinker Redwood its characteristic sonic properties ... not unlike Western Red cedar, but with more of the qualities associated with Spruce ...  a bolder, crisper, punchier tone than Cedar, but with all the rich, strong overtones intact!  Hopefully some of this comes across in David Martin's audio file (see below).
