| We've just received a couple
of new guitars from Annapolis Maryland luthier Andrew White.
Andrew visited our shop last summer with a couple of impressive instruments
and promised at that time to ship us a couple as soon as he was able.
The 'Souix 3' model pictured
above features a spectacular set of figured Walnut back & sides in
conjunction with a Western Red cedar top, boxwood binding, ebony
'pyramid' bridge and mitred purfling. This guitar has a unique Venetian
body design with a 15" lower bout dimension and 4" body depth at the end
pin.
The non cutaway instrument
pictured below features Indian rosewood back & sides, again with a
Western Red cedar top, rosewood binding, handmade wood rosette,
rosewood 'pyramid' bridge and mitred purfling.
The real story on both
of these guitars is on the inside. Andrew has developed a unique,
almost Kasha-like fan bracing configuration utilizing tapered I-beam style
struts that give the maximum strength for the minimum of mass. Two
of the fan struts continue through a 'flying' transverse strut into the
upper bouts to utilize as much of the soundboard as possible!
Both of these instruments are
maximized for fingerstyle guitar; great balance, even response
and a surprisingly thick midrange!
