This new MF5 Deluxe from Bill Collings is the
crown jewel of our mandolin offering. From Gibson to Gilchrist,
we have NEVER had a mandolin like this one! From the tip of
the intricately inlaid peghead to the bottom of the custom engraved tailpiece,
this mandolin personifies the word " Deluxe ". The engraved
Waverly tuners are precision machined and exact in their movement.
The radiused fingerboard, polished frets and low action make for effortless
playability. The hand graduated top plate with tone bars in
conjunction with a meticulously applied varnish finish produce a potent
mélange of power and tonal nuance.
Previous to Lloyd Loar's tenure at Gibson,
Orville used shellac for his finishes. Loar introduced Alkyd based
varnishes on his Master Series instruments because of its sonic properties.
In the words of Bill Collings "Varnish takes a lot more time, both in
application and drying, and is certainly not conducive to mass production.
The difference in tone, however, helps to make up for this. The varnish
seems to create a faster response with deeper and warmer treble, and a
greater overall dynamic range." I couldn't have said it any better
myself!!! |
