| Now this IS a very cool alternative to the standard
Orchestra Model formula! Bill Collings has built a large part of
his reputation on making super articulate OM's with a nice edgy attack
transient, superb clarity, an uncanny treble/mid/bass balance
and a fireworks display of overtones.
This Custom OM2H SS not only has a shorter 24.9"
scale length, but also sports a set of sides that are a full 4 11/16"
deep at the end pin! After spending some time comparing this instrument
to a regular Collings OM2H it became apparent that the sonic differences
are subtle but audible.
The slight differences I'm hearing make
sense. The attack transient of this guitar still has a nice "point"
to it, but the shorter scale takes just a bit of the edge off.
Certainly the deeper body beefs up the lower mids and bass register.
I believe the slightly sweeter and less aggressive treble register is a
function of both the shorter scale length AND the deeper body.
In short ... this instrument still (thankfully)
sounds like a Collings OM2H, but with an ever-so-slightly sweeter,
less assertive overall tonality. It still has plenty of complex layers
to engage your ears but with a lightly tinted pair of sonic sunglasses
on for those of you who don't like extreme brightness! |
