Sergei de Jonge / Lilly Lee :  Australian Blackwood

Sergei de Jonge, Lilly Lee Guitar
I was upstairs in the office last week when one of our guys told me Sergei and Devora de Jonge had just walked in.  When I went downstairs,  Sergei  introduced me to his latest apprentice. "Lilly,  I'd like you to meet David Wren.  Dave used to make guitars.  Now he makes money".  You've got a way with words Sergei!

Well,  after we all stopped laughing,  I got around to the business of checking out the latest instrument from the de Jonge workshop.  What a guitar!  This instrument has the de Jonge label in it,  but I gather it was a collaborative effort that both Lilly and Sergei created together.

.
This stunning sounding instrument was made in Mr. de Jonge's "OM" mold and features a very high-grade bookmatched Sitka spruce top with an intensely patterned spalted maple soundhole rosette,  sculpted ebony bridge,  figured tropical mahogany neck,  expertly applied French Polish finish and to top it off ... a wonderful set of Australian Blackwood for the back and sides!

Australian Blackwood (Acacia melanoxylon) is a true Acacia,  the same genus as koa,  and exhibits many of the visual and sonic attributes of its cousin from Hawaii.  The trees are a fast growing evergreen that typically grow in eastern Australia,  attaining maximum heights of around 45 meters over a life span of 50 years or so.   The trees are extremely hardy and thrive even in poor soil conditions with little water.

Like koa,  Australian Blackwood often imparts a midrange tonality somewhere between mahogany and rosewood ... nice warmth that falls short of being nasal sounding,  with great space between the notes and in the hands of a talented builder like this one ... a superb many-layered series of partials that really keeps the listener totally engaged.  This guitar is a spectacular introduction to a very talented new luthier ... Lilly Lee!
