Deering Tenbrooks Banjos : The Legacy

The Tenbrooks is a new breed of banjo named after the famed Kentucky Derby winner who beat, by an overwhelming margin, the ever-popular Mollie McCarthy in the most stirring and memorable race in the history of the Kentucky Derby.  Bill Monroe, the father of bluegrass, immortalized the compelling, memorable race between Tenbrooks and Mollie McCarthy in a song which has now become a traditional favorite among bluegrass enthusiasts.

The new Tenbrooks model is the culmination of a collaborative effort between Deering Banjo Company, the internationally renowned banjoist Jens Krüger, and the oldest bell foundry of Europe. Greg Deering and Jens Krüger combined forces with the goal of raising the banjo as an instrument to a higher level of performance musically so that banjoists are not limited in their scope of achievement. This was the concept that motivated the design of the Tenbrooks banjos. To accomplish this required a considerable amount of research and a better understanding of tonering design. Banjo Virtuoso Jens Krüger realized the need for a new tonering that would enhance the extreme low frequencies that support and compliment banjo tone. This required a fresh approach to tonering manufacture and prompted the collaboration with the Rüetschi Bell Foundry.

Bells cast in the 15th Century by the Rüetschi Bell Foundry are still in use today.  The foundry’s skill and knowledge enables them to repair ancient bells with precision and mastery, without loss of their original tonal integrity. Only a supreme  mastery of bronze casting can produce such success. Only this kind of mastery  bronze casting can produce the extraordinary Tenbrooks tonering. The unprecedented extreme precision of both the casting and machining process demands an unplated finish to prevent stifling the far-reaching tonal spectrum that is completely unique to the Tenbrooks banjo. The Tenbrooks tonering is finished to a shimmering, lustrous high polish and then treated with linseed oil.

Deering Tenbrooks Banjo : The Saratoga Star

Deering Tenbrooks Sarasota Star

The Tenbrooks Saratoga Star shares all of the upgraded hardware and unparalleled Tenbrooks tone ring from the Rüetschi Bell Foundry,  but features a highly flamed maple neck and resonator.   Most players agree that a maple neck and resonator add a subtle degree of brightness and clarity to the overall tonality of a banjo.   While the Tenbrooks Legacy is a very powerful instrument that will be heard within any band mix,  it also has a slightly rounder overall tonality.  The Tenbrooks Sarasota Star was developed for the professional who wants slightly more edge with a brighter tone!

Deering Banjos : The Jens Kruger Banjo

Jens Kruger Tenbrooks Banjo

Greg Deering and Jens Krüger combined forces with the goal of raising the banjo as an instrument to a higher level of performance musically so that banjoists are not limited in their scope of achievement. This was the concept that motivated the design of the Tenbrooks banjos. To accomplish this required a considerable amount of research and a better understanding of tone ring design. Banjo Virtuoso Jens Krüger realized the need for a new tone ring that would enhance the extreme low frequencies that support and compliment banjo tone. This required a fresh approach to tone ring manufacture.

Jens Krüger guided it along in working with the Swiss Rüetschi Bell Foundry, having 600+ years of experience in metallurgy, and drawing on that knowledge while also incorporating innovative techniques they developed a tone ring with the evenly crystallized molecular structure which is necessary to create this very exceptional tone. This type of molecular structure is usually only able to be accomplished in huge bell castings. But the breakthrough came when they discovered how to accomplish this in a smaller casting for Deering's Tenbrooks banjos with the Jens Krüger tone ring.

Deering Tenbrooks Banjos
Custom Sarasota Star Tenor Banjo with Legacy inlays
Deering Tenbrooks Sarasota Star Banjo

How do you define "best"?   Well,  anyway you cut it,  this particular instrument is THE best tenor banjo we have ever had the pleasure of ordering!   The figured maple neck and resonator have a very deep and tight curl to them.  The gold plated hardware lends a nice warm glow to the overall aesthetic,  the custom Legacy fingerboard inlays are gorgeous and the custom armrest engraving is a nice personal touch too!

Of course the the best thing by far about these Tenbrooks banjos are their sound.  The Tenbrooks tone ring is designed by Jens Kruger and made by the legendary Swiss Rüetschi Bell Foundry and is the heart and soul of these powerful instruments.  This tone ring in conjunction with the custom light one-piece flange and deep side-tapered resonator gives this banjo a power that is able to cut through in an ensemble environment without sounding strident.  The tone of this instrument has a roundness that projects and cuts like no other banjo we have ever encountered!!!
