I am a real jazz guitar nut. I scour the
internet, leaf through all of the glossy monthly guitar mags and
keep my ear to the ground for cool vintage pieces. Yes ... I know,
I need to get a life but hey ... I just love them! I love the way
they look, their history, colours, tones ... their cases
even! Having said that, there is NO doubt in my mind that the
GB Model that luthier Douglas Harrison has been making for a number of
years is THE perfect gigging jazz guitar ... bar none!!!
Even though this instrument is all
solid woods with a true carved and graduated spruce top, the smaller
14" body in conjunction with a small sustain block under the bridge gives
this instrument exceptional feedback rejection. Harrison's unique
design concept for the GB gives it the perfect blend of a solid body's
even response with a full sized archtop's tonal nuance. This instrument
is incredibly responsive to even the most subtle variance in the dynamics
of your right hand attack and somehow manages to produce a considerably
wider palette of tones that are both pragmatic and musical.
Douglas' choice of the Seymour Duncan Jazz pickup gives that traditional
rich jazz sound without sacrificing clarity or overtone detail and the
push-pull series/parallel pickup switching provides the perfect Freddie
Green rhythm tone!
The quality of the tonewoods, consumate
craftsmanship, exquisite physical balance, comfortable neck contour and
sheer breadth of tone on this new GB Model Harrison, all add up to what
I would consider another step in the evolution of the modern jazz guitar! |
