| California guitar
builder Kenny Hill is one of those rare luthiers who can legitimately claim
to hand build musical instruments. Utilizing the best of age-old techniques
and traditional jigs his small shop crafts truly unique instruments.
Kenny personally
supervises and participates in the harvesting of tone woods that will ultimately
contribute to the nuances of tone in his Master Series guitars. He
effectively uses a tried and true "go-bar deck" to apply the gentle pressure
needed to glue his top and back braces. The ancient Spanish method of using
rope as a device for clamping book-matched tops, backs and purfling is
a relatively rare sight in today's shops but is used to advantage in Kenny's
workshop.
The "La Curva" model
pictured above arrived last week and is a cutaway version of the Hauser
inspired Munich Model from Hill's "Master Series". This instrument
has all of the clarity and sparkling overtones of the non cutaway version
but with with complete access to the highest registers of the fingerboard.
Musicians devoted to jazz as well as classical idioms are especially attracted
to this design! |
