| When I initially play a new guitar that
is delivered to our store, my first impression is usually with regards
to whether the overall sound is 'linear' or 'layered'. In my
mind, an instrument that, after the preliminary attack transient,
displays a prolonged fundamental to the note before 'blooming' into a subtle
or subdued overtone series, has a 'linear' quality. Some
players like this kind of one dimensional sound, especially in the
context of a dense track mix or for aggressive rhythm work in a live situation.
For me though, I find the complex structure of a 'layered' sound
much more appealing.
This new instrument from acclaimed
guitar builder William Laskin, without a doubt has one of the most
multifaceted sonic structures I have ever experienced.
Yes, there is still a very solid, meaty, identifiable fundamental
to each note. Yes, there is a clearly defined attack
transient that avoids being harsh even when you 'dig in'. Yes,
the side port has a dramatic affect on both the player's perception AND
the projection. But this instrument has so much more than that.
The resonance from this guitar literally surrounds you with a faultless
balance and clarity. The bass register has authority,
the mids an understated sweetness and the trebles possess that magic amalgamation
of thickness and sparkle. For me, this is as close to
the 'perfect' sounding steel string guitar as it gets!!!!!! |
