| Much has been written about the mechanics
of inlay art; great books and informative magazine articles.
Before you dig in and start cutting out that pearl however, you have
to come up with a concept and design for your project!
I have NO idea what inspires luthier
William ' Grit ' Laskin to come up with his unique inlay designs (or how
a mere human could execute them so flawlessly) but I do know that he often
asks friends to 'model' for some of the more challenging designs.
It was for this purpose that we got together in my living room a few months
ago to take a few shots to help in the design of his latest peghead.
Grit had an idea to try and capture that
phenomenon of infinite reflections when an object is positioned between
two mirrors (have you ever been in an elevator with mirrors on both walls
and seen your reflection multiplied?). Well, picture
the two of us in a small room with mirrors (that were WAY too small) gaffer
taped to lamps and walls, dogs running around, tripods falling
over .... you get the idea. How this uniquely creative work of art
came out of that session I will never know!!! And yes,
if the skinny balding guy looks slightly familiar, that would be
me playing the guitar.
Rumor has it that this inlay is going to be featured
on the cover of Acoustic Guitar Magazine for it's August 2004 issue!!!
