| The founder of the Ramirez dynasty, José
Ramírez of Galarreta and Planell, was born in Madrid in 1858 and
at the age of 12 he began working as an apprentice at the workshop of Maestro
Francisco González located on the Carrera de San Jerónimo
street of Madrid. In 1890, José Ramírez I established
himself at Concepción Jerónima nº 2, where the Ramirez
descendants remained until the year 1995.
At the beginning of 1993, Amalia
Ramirez restructured the shop, returning to the original outline
of a reduced workshop, and a limited production. Today all Ramirez professional
guitars are sold well in advance. In the summer of 1995, the Ramirez
store moved from Concepción Jerónima nº2, to the street
of La Paz nº 8, very near the old store.
At the moment, the House of Ramírez workforce
comprises of nine people. In the workshop there are three officials -Carmelo
Llerena, Fernando Morcuende and Ricardo Sáenz -, and two apprentices
-Marcos Moyano and Pedro Abel Morcuende. Supervising the organization is
Marisa Sanzano, who checks the production in the workshop and occupies
herself with the administrative work.
Currently the Ramirez workshop and store
are under the very capable supervision of Amalia Ramirez. Amalia,
a fine guitar builder, says this about the current Professional line
of instruments. "I have re-adopted the model of the 1960's, applying
new techniques to its construction and basing it on the experiences and
advances of past years. With the Classic Line, we therefore return to our
guitar with a deep, potent sound, rich in harmonics, characteristic of
the sixties."
The Twelfth Fret is proud to be the
Canadian distributor of the Ramirez Professional Series of instruments
including the Concert 1a models. The Ramirez C-650 Model 1a
pictured above is currently available for evaluation at our store!
