Taylor Guitars

In the words of Bob Taylor;"About twenty years ago, we started Taylor guitars with a simple philosophy of building - that guitars should sound good and be easy to play. To build them, we use our hands, we use machines, we use good materials, and above all we use our heads. Whatever it takes to make guitars that meet our objectives, we do it."

This refreshing attitude is reflected in Taylor's guitars. They're visually innovative and flawless in craftsmanship. Bob wrote the book on acoustic guitar playability. You don't have to fight these guitars. They play themselves. Sonically, we'll let you be the judge. We think they stand up to anything we've ever stocked.

300 Series
  • The 300 Series features include solid wood construction, an ebony fretboard and pin bridge, Grover tuners and scalloped top bracing. There are no unbound body edges, no laminates and the finish on the top is buffed to a high gloss (back and sides are satin). The tops in this series are Sitka spruce. The back and sides are Sapele mahogany.
400 Series
  • This year, the 400 series gets a new look and sound. The solid Ovangkol used for the backs and sides is no newcomer to high quality guitars - it's been used in Europe for years. Ovangkol's deep tone is similar to Indian rosewood, and it's warm brown colors and unique grain are protected with a thin, satin finish. The 400 series shares many of the features of the 300 series, but with white bound fingerboard and body.

500 Series
  • These tropical mahogany guitars have long been favoured by players that like a strong cutting treble response coupled with a well defined bass register. The gloss finish, tortoise-shell binding, abalone rosette, and mother-of-pearl diamond fretboard inlay highlights these fine instruments.
600 Series
  • This series showcases the beauty of highly figured maple while offering a distinctly different tone than mohogany or rosewood guitars. Delicate three piece pearl fretboard inlays compliment the amber patina used to bring out the curls and swirls of this exciting wood. The600 series now comes in a natural finish, or in stunning transparent colours - amber, red, black, blue or green.

700 Series
  • These rosewood guitars have a subtle, almost classical understated elegance. The growing popularity of cedar topped guitars prompted Taylor to offer this entire series using this unique tonewood. Spruce tops are available at no extra cost. Mother-of-pearl dot markers,  koa rosette and rosewood body binding complete the features offered in this series.
800 Series
  • Every 800 model gets the full compliment of fine Taylor details; bound peghead and fretboard, pearl  inlays, gold tuners and abalone rosette. But these rosewood guitars are more than a collection of attractive details. Much of what makes a Taylor qualify for this series is the quality of the wood and the years of experience that their best luthiers bring to the task of turning wood into fine instruments.

900 Series
  • This series invites close scrutiny and rewards the viewer with many fine details. With "41" style pearl bordering the top and soundhole, intricate fretboard inlays, Englemann spruce tops, and exotic wood purflings, these instruments are an exciting combination of great aesthetics and complex tones.
Presentation Series
  • The most striking feature of a Presentation Series Taylor is the Byzantine inlay of colourful Abalone that weaves it's way up the fretboard. Matching abalone graces the peghead and bridge. Once you get past the ornamentation, you'll find the woods even more impressive. Only the finest seasoned master grade Engelmann tops and Bob's personal stash of exotic back and sides are utilized. Although highly decorated, these guitars are meant to be played!!!

Taylor Model Designations

Taylor uses a logical, 3-digit model numbering system for their "Acoustic Electric" cutaway line. The first digit is the series number, denoting types of woods and level of ornamentation (see above). The second digit usually denotes the number of strings: "1" indicating a 6 string model and "5" specifying a 12 string instrument. The third digit signifies the body shape: "0" for Dreadnought, "2" for Grand Concert, "4" for Grand Auditorium and "5" for Jumbo. For instance a model 710 would be a rosewood six string dreadnought and a model 655 would be a maple twelve string Jumbo. The added "CE" stands for cutaway/electric.  Any guitar from this line can be special ordered without pickup.

The non-cutaway "Acoustic Guitar" line uses a letter to denote body size followed by a number indicating which series it is from.  For instance a GS5 is a Grand Symphony with 500 series features ... a GA6 is a Grand Auditorium body size with 600 series appointments ... a DN8 represents a Dreadnought body size with 800 series tonewoods.  Any of the guitars from this series can be special ordered with the Taylor Expression System pickup/preamp on board.
