The Fender Mustang first appeared in 1965, as a new student model and was available in two short scale lengths - 24 inches or 22.5 inches. It featured two single coil pickups and slider selector switches along with the single volume and tone controls. As well, a new vibrato system was added with the same style of floating bridge as seen on the Fender Jaguar and Jazzmaster models.

This 1965 Fender Mustang is finished in red - and may have been finished in red twice. It looks like a Dakota Red colour was applied over a Fiesta Red layer. As the top Dakota coat has worn, the brighter Fiesta layer is seen. The hardware appears to be largely original. The control pots date to 1964, and the neck dates to 1965. It has been professionally refretted and had a bone nut added, so it plays well. The original silver/grey hardshell case is included.
