1930 Martin
OM-28*
(main photo) |
-
serial number 45310 circa 1930
-
well, to start with, this is THE best sounding OM Martin I have personally
ever played; this one just blows the doors off any other OM period!
I've known of this guitar for quite a number of years now, as it has been
owned by one of Canada's busiest studio players; whether you know
it not, you've probably heard this guitar on the radio or TV;
this guitar had been poorly refinished years ago and was subsequently restored
by having a neck reset, refinish, new bridge, new pickguard (old one was
missing) and refret with period style bar frets; the Brazilian back
and sides are gorgeous and show the typical rotary resaw burn marks from
this period as well as a light patch in the waist on both sides;
this guitar is a very usable instrument as well as being a piece of history;
this would have been one of the first Martins with a decal on the peghead,
with a pickguard, with a 14 fret neck and with a plank headstock;
this is the birth of the modern flattop guitar!

William Laskin
Custom 7-string*
(photo) |
-
serial number 251091 circa 1991-92
-
No, William Laskin would not just add another string to his normal instrument
and leave it at that. He has added an extra low-tuning string with
completely variable scale length via a peghead ramp that houses a sliding
ivory nut and matching ivory downbearing tree, keeping a constant action
height as the tuning drops as low as "B". This system allows low
tuning while maintaining a crisp attack transient and a smooth tonal transition
to the other 6 strings! Mr. Laskin has somehow managed to attain
a wonderful balance on this instrument as well as capturing his signature
ultra sensitive response!!!
