Oasis Ukulele Humidifier OH-18

You probably already know that your instrument can crack in dry weather. Repairing a cracked top of a fine instrument is both expensive and can alter its sound. To solve this problem our repair shop recommends the Oasis humidifiers.

Like other soundhole humidifiers, Oasis fits between the strings of your instrument. The materials that touch your strings are relatively soft and will not scratch your strings. A blue polyurethane stabilizing bar fits over the neck of the ukulele humidifier. Once positioned in the sound hole, the stabilizing bar lies across the guitar strings to ensure even weight distribution. Oasis never touches the body of your ukulele.

The Oasis Ukulele Humidifier OH-18 is the same size as the OH-1 humidifier for guitar, but has a special hanger which allows the humidifier to hang at an angle from the strings inside the ukulele soundhole. Because the ukulele is a smaller instrument, it needs less supplemental humidification than a guitar. The humidity reduction was accomplished by modifying the liner for the OH-18 ukulele humidifier.

Note: Because tap and bottled water have dissolved minerals that can clog the liner, distilled water is recommended to extend the useful life of your humidifier.

Made From Specially Designed Fabric

The body of the Oasis Ukulele Humidifier OH-18 is made from a specially designed fabric that allows water vapor (but not water) to pass through it. As the vapor transmission takes place, a vacuum is created and Oasis shrinks to compensate for the loss of water. By watching the Oasis humidifier shrink, you can determine when it is ready for refill. When refilling, you don’t have to guess when it is full. Simply unscrew the black cap, fill with water to the top of the container and replace the cap. Once sealed, the watertight container is your first line of defense against leaks.

Humigel, the super absorbent polymer crystals inside the Oasis Humidifier, are your second line of defense. Humigel captures up to 500 times its weight in water in an absorbent gel matrix.

The Oasis Ukulele Humidifier OH-18 comes with the special ukulele stabilizer and a 10 cc syringe for increased distilled water filling control.

How To Fill Your Oasis

Don’t dump out the crystals.   There is a very small quantity of Humigel crystals, a dry, super water absorbent polymer, in every humidifier (.6 ccs). In most cases, you can shake the humidifier and hear them rattle around. Some users hear the rattling, open the cap and mistakenly dump them out. If you do this, you will need to purchase a Humigel replacement kit.

Hold Oasis by the yellow ends.   Always hold the Oasis humidifier by the yellow or brown ends rather than the fabric in the middle. The ends are rigid plastic which supports the structure of the humidifier. The middle blue or khaki section is soft squeezable fabric where water vapor escapes. If you squeeze the center while the cap is off the humidifier, Oasis will behave like a toothpaste tube and eject the water and crystals. If you do this, you will need to purchase a Humigel replacement kit.

Fill Oasis slowly.  Oasis typically holds slightly more than one ounce of water. When filling your Oasis for the first time, the crystals will need a few minutes to absorb the water. If you try to fill the humidifier too quickly, it is easy to put in more water than it can hold. The crystals can be washed out with too much water. So, we recommend limiting the amount of water you initially put into the humidifier to 3 full syringes (10 cc’s each) and filling the humidifier slowly, giving the crystals time to absorb the water. We strongly recommend that you only use distilled water. Tap water contains minerals which will clog the Oasis membrane over time. Watch carefully, and stop filling when the water reaches the top. After the initial filling of your Oasis you will need to recharge the humidifier once a week with 7-10 cc’s of distilled water.

Sometimes, Humigel crystals may stick near the opening of the tube making it difficult to refill the device. If this happens, first bring the humidifier back to its original shape by gently holding the two yellow ends and pulling them away from each other. Secondly, hold the bottom yellow end, and gently tap your Oasis® on a hard service. This will knock the crystals loose to fall back towards the center of the humidifier. Then, proceed with refilling.

Spread the strings:  Oasis soundhole humidifiers are designed to be installed and removed after the user spreads the strings. Since the humidifier is wider than the strings, installing or removing it without spreading the strings will damage the fabric on the humidifier and lead to premature failure of the humidifier.
