The Martin 0028 has been built for over a century, with the first known example appearing in 1898. The first mention of the 00 body size dates to 1877! Martin’s 00 body was considered enormous when introduced, and was the largest size until the first 000 sized guitar appeared in 1902, followed a decade later by the D body size built for the Ditson company.

Here we have a brand new C. F. Martin J-40. The J-40 features a tight-waisted jumbo body shape, built from a Sitka spruce top and Indian rosewood for the back and sides. Mahogany is used for the neck, and ebony for the bound fingerboard and bridge. This is one of the few new J-40s available anywhere, and given the world wide and industry wide impact the pandemic has had, they will continue to be hard to obtain.

MORE →The Martin D35, recognizable for its distinctive three-piece back, has been part of Martin’s standard lineup since its 1965 introduction. The design was generated for a practical reason – it allowed use of smaller sections of Rosewood that could not fit on a two-piece back as used on the D-28 or D-45. While the D28 and D35 share many construction features, the D35 can have a bit more tonal range and better developed low and high end response and balance.

MORE →The Martin 518 Terz appeared in the Martin catalog from 1898 until 1989 and despite its long production run had one notable players, the great Marty Robbins. Sting has also used the Terz. The Terz is a small bodied instrument that’s tuned up a minor third, meaning the tuning is G-C-F-A#-D-G low to high. The shorter 21.375 inch scale makes this possible without excessive tension. The Martin 518 Terz design was influenced by Viennese Terz styles built by the Stauffer company C F Martin apprenticed with. There were also Italian Terz models with smaller bodies.
