MORE →This is unusual for us to see – a Jack Spira Cittern of Australian Blackwood, built during 2005 at Spira’s shop in Boolarra, east of Melbourne. Jack Spira has been building for over 30 years, focusing on steel string guitars in regular, tenor and baritone forms, plus Irish Bouzoukis, Citterns, and Octave Mandolins. He also does repair and custom work, in particular engraved inlays. His work is highly regarded, and popular enough that few make it to the used market in Canada.

MORE →ere we have a C F Martin D28, built in Nazareth, Pennsylvania in 1969. 1969 was officially the last year that Martin used Brazilian Rosewood for their Rosewood models, and in 1970 Indian Rosewood was in use. A few guitars were built with the dwindling stocks of Brazilian, eventually coming down to Brazilian being used for the center panel on the three-piece D-35 back. Brazilian Rosewood is used for the sides, back, and head plate.

MORE →Built as a limited edition during 2015, the Gibson L00 1930s Classic heads back to the early days of the American steel string guitar’s meteoric rise in popularity, as it displaced the banjo. The Gibson L-00 was introduced in 1929 and built until 1946, though it made its first catalog appearance in 1932, and at the time sold for $25 new! It featured a Spruce top with Mahogany for the sides, back, body blocks and neck. Originally, the fingerboard was unbound and ‘ebonized’ – dyed black – and could have been any number of woods other than Rosewood, depending on availability and price.
