Fender Telecaster Maple Neck Blonde, 1968

Instrument Categories: , ,

The Fender Telecaster Maple Neck Blonde was an incredible innovation when it was introduced as the Broadcaster in 1950, rapidly shifting to its current name after a trademark dispute with Gretsch. Naturally, not all players appreciated the solidbody electric concept, but its overwhelming advantages quickly put Fender on the top of the market.

Here we have a classic, a Fender Telecaster Maple neck with blonde finish, built during 1968 at the CBS-owned Fender plant in Fullerton, California. The neck date stamp reads 3JAN1968B, and here the 3 does not refer to the third of January, but rather to the neck type – Telecaster or Esquire. The B refers to the fingerboard width – there were four in increasing widths: A, B, C and D, with D at 1.875 inches being rare and B at 1.625 inches being ‘Normal’. A width is 1.5 inch, and C is 1.75 inches wide.

During early 1967, Fender made the original mandatory Maple fingerboard an option – though Rosewood fingerboards had been available since 1959. On a number of necks from the 1960s, including this one, the Maple fingerboard was added just like the Rosewood board. On these necks, the truss rod was installed from the ‘front’ before the fingerboard was glued on. A thin line can be seen at side of the neck, and most visibly, there is no walnut ‘Skunk’ stripe on the back of the neck. Conversely, there are also Rosewood fingerboard necks with the skunk stripe – where the truss rod was mounted from the back.

This wonderful Fender Telecaster Maple Neck Blonde guitar is largely in original condition, with its two-piece Maple neck and a lightly translucent blonde finish on a lightweight Ash body, and original electronics and components.

This guitar has been used as intended, so there is wear top the finish and frets, but it is quite playable as is. The first fret appears to have been removed and replaced (there is a chip in the fingerboard) but the frets and neck finish appear to be original.

The original Fender rectangular hard shell case is included.
