Brand: Gibson
Instrument Categories: Acoustic Steel String, Guitars, SOLD
During the 1930s the guitar was eclipsing the banjo, and in 1942 the Gibson LG-2 appeared along with the LG-1 and LG-3, though the latter two were dropped quickly. The LG-2 was produced throughout the war and was a very popular instrument. If you see wartime photos that show a Gibson flat-top guitar, it was likely an LG-2.
This Gibson LG-2 was produced just after World War Two ended. Because there’s no serial number or any production numbers, we’re dating it by features. The LG-2 was introduced in 1942, with a Firestripe pickguard (changed to faux tortoise in 1943) and a Banner logo – the famous “Only a Gibson is Good Enough” banner. This banner was discontinued shortly after at the end of the war, in 1946, but the Script ‘Gibson’ logo was maintained until 1948. So, this example dates to 1946 or possibly 1947.
The Gibson LG-2 has a small body, 14 1/8 inches across, built with Adirondack Spruce top and Mahogany for the rest of the body and neck. The fingerboard and bridge were Rosewood, which at that time meant Brazilian. Tuners were strip-mounted models with creme plastic buttons. A Sunburst finish was very common. The top is X-Braced; some other models at the time were still ladder-braced.
This guitar is in good working order, and has had a bit of work done- the original bridge has been replaced with another Brazilian version, and the orinal is in the case. It plays very nicely and has a wonderful tone.
A non-original hard shell case is included.
