Monteleone Grand Artist Mandolin Sunburst, 1985

Instrument Categories:

Here is a rare and wonderful instrument – a Monteleone Grand Artist mandolin, built during 1985. John Monteleone is one of the world’s finest builders of arched top guitars and mandolins.  This mandolin was built at Monteleone’s shop in Bayshore, New York.

Though it draws from the Lloyd Loar era F-5, the Monteleone Grand Artist mandolin is not a copy, but a re-imagining of the design. It is more in line with what John D’Angelico would produce, showing Art Deco influences. And unlike the F-5, the scroll is hollow, rather than a carved block. This provides more air space and slightly improved bottom end and volume.

Materials used in the Monteleone Grand Artist include a high-grade and tight grained Sitka Spruce top, Flame Maple for the sides, back and neck, and Ebony for the fingerboard, bridge, headplate and pickguard. The headstock inlays are Mother of Pearl and the tuners and custom tailpiece are gold plated. Construction and finish quality are of an extremely high level. This exceptional instrument has had some service and a small top crack near the tailpiece has been repaired. There is moderate to heavy fret wear under the treble strings, on frets one to six.

This Monteleone Grand Artist is sold with a Paganoni hard shell case and creme fabric cover.

John Monteleone is acknowledged as one of the finest builders of arched top guitars and mandolins, and has been building and repairing professionally since 1973.

Here is the Metropolitan Museum of Art describing the Monteleone Grand Artist mandolin:

“The Grand Artist model was introduced by John Monteleone in 1977. It marked a significant refinement of the Lloyd Loar era Gibson design that had been predominant for more than half a century. The Grand Artist features a body profile that was redrawn by Monteleone, but based on the traditional form of an F-model Gibson mandolin with two points on the treble side of the instrument and a scroll on the bass side. Monteleone also re-stylized the f-holes and created an abbreviated pickguard that would not cover the treble soundhole. The tailpiece and bridge also feature a complete redesign. The Grand Artist Model also features a radial fingerboard that better fits the natural curvature of a player’s hands.”
