Paramount Style B 5 String Banjo Maple, 1922

Instrument Categories:

The Paramount Style B 5 string banjo was introduced in 1921, after William. P. Rettberg retired and William L. Lange assumed control of Rettberg and Lange, changing the company name in the process.

Lange’s Paramount, like Rettberg and Lange and the Buckbee factory they purchased in 2897, built decent banjos in large numbers. Up to the company’s closure in 1935, Paramount built and shipped as many as 15,000 banjos.

Here we’re looking at a largely original Paramount Style B 5-string banjo, built at the New York City plant. This model was introduced after Rettberg’s 1921 retirement, and as it has a low serial number, this banjo is a fairly early model, produced in late 1921 or during 1922.

The Paramount Style B 5 string is built using Maple for the bulk of the wooden components, with a bound Brazilian Rosewood bridge and headplate. The classic, fairly complex inlay set is executed in engraved Mother of Pearl. There is natural wear and checking to the lacquer finish, and there is some damage to parts of the headstock inlays from previous re-gluing work, along with some cracks in the Brazilian Rosewood head plate – this is to be expected on an instrument nearly a century old. The frets are original, as is much of the hardware- there are a few replaced hooks and nuts. The Page tuners are original. This banjo has been recently serviced here by Anne Hartman, and plays fairly well.

The case is likely original with a Vancouver Music name plate attached, and contains the original wrench, period business cards and accessories.
