Collings SJ

When Bill Collings decides to make something, as we have all come to know, he doesn’t mess around! So when he decided to tackle the task of creating a ‘small jumbo’ that would offer a different sonic slant to the Collings tone palette, it was no surprise that the workmanship was immaculate and the wood selection of the highest standards.

Bourgeois Country Boy SOLD

Bourgeois Country Boy SOLD

Historically, manufacturers of flattop steel string guitars have reserved mahogany for their plainer low end guitars … which in a lot of ways is a shame. In Dana Bourgeois’ words “Mahogany guitars are often looked at as poor cousins of rosewood guitars, but we politely disagree, dressing the Country Boy in classic appointments such as ebony fretboard and bridge, wooden rosette, tortoiseshell binding, vintage style top toner, and nickel Waverly tuners. We also consider it worthy of the same diamond volute that we use on the back of our Vintage Dreadnought peghead. In addition to selecting only the finest quartersawn and matched South American mahogany backs and sides, the Country Boy Dreadnought is appointed with an extra premium sitka spruce top.”

Bourgeois DB Signature Dreadnought SOLD

We are seeing more and more great flat top guitars with Madagascar rosewood these days. Madagascar is great choice for builders because its sound and look is so close to Brazilian rosewood at a much lower price. Being a little heavier than Brazilian, Dana hand picks the tops, sides and back to keep the overall weight down and ensure the response characteristics are maintained. With top and back woods picked primarily for their tone the Madagascar rosewood and Adirondack spruce on this guitar go a long way to augment the classic good looks of this dreadnought.

Bourgeois DBJC Koa SOLD Discontinued

Yes this guitar just might be the next best thing to being on vacation in Hawaii!! When it came time to place another order for one of my all time favourite Bourgeois guitars I decided to try another exotic wood pairing. Seeking advise from the master I called up Bourgeois and asked what fantastic wood set they might have stashed away. The enthusiastic answer came in the form of a highly flamed Hawaiian Koa. I contemplated using a Sitka spruce top but Dana suggested that the usual Redwood top would sound great with the Koa and wow he sure was right!
