Fender Deluxe Reverb 1968 “Silverface”

Brand:

Evolving from one of Leo Fender’s oldest designs, the Fender Deluxe Reverb 1968 “Silverface” introduced updates to the ‘Blackface’ models that had gained Reverb and Vibrato.

However, in 1968, not many changes had been made to the Deluxe Reverb to take it away from the ‘Blackface’ circuitry; at this point most changes were cosmetic. The cabinet tolex was still black, but the control panel face shifted to chrome with blue lettering for the model name, the grille cloth cover changed, with chrome trim around the speaker baffle.

This Fender Deluxe Reverb 1968 falls into this category of changes being mostly cosmetic. The transformers are from the ‘Blackface’ era. It is in overall good condition with some wear and tear. The Reverb / Vibrato footswitch is long gone, and it has a 3-prong power cord for safety. The original speaker (Jensen or Fender-branded Oxford) has been replaced with a Celestion G12/75.

The Fender Deluxe Reverb comes from the Deluxe, one of Leo Fender’s original amps introduced in 1948. It has developed with the times, eventually becoming one of the standby amps for professional, medium volume use in many stages and venues. I recall a visit to the new Opry and being surprised to see that the stage amps (built into carts) were all Deluxe Reverbs; I had expected them to be Twins. The Deluxe Reverb delivers sufficient but not overwhelming stage volume, with great tone.
