MORE →Now discontinued, the Deering Deluxe Mahogany 5-string banjo was one of Deering’s most popular models, with Mahogany for the resonator and neck. Towards the end of its run, Walnut was used for the neck and resonator. This Deering Deluxe Mahogany is in good overall condition was built at the Deering shop in Spring Valley California during June 2011.

MORE →Drawing from 1957 specifications, the Fender Eric Johnson Stratocaster is built from a light-weight two-piece Alder body, and a one-piece Maple neck. (This model is also available with a Rosewood fingerboard). Since Johnson removes the backplate, it’s not installed on the signature model and mounting holes are not drilled. The tuners are a staggered set – the posts for the high E, B and G strings are shortened to increase downbearing at the nut without requiring a string tree, which can add friction.

Starting from the Grand Concert design, a soft Venetian cutaway is added, and the body is built using a Sitka Spruce top paired with traditional Indian Rosewood for the back and sides. The 12-fret neck is Mahogany, with Ebony used for the headplate, bridge, and bound fingerboard.

DeVoe came to lutherie in a not unusual way. He was taking classical and flamenco guitar lessons, intending on a career as a musician, but could not find an instrument to match the quality of his teacher’s 1924 Santos Hernandez guitar.
