Here’ s a new, old stock 2015 Hofner Gold Label Club Bass in solid red! The Club Bass is also known as the 500/2 – the 500/1 is the iconic violin shaped ‘Beatle Bass’. This is a ‘Gold Label’ model, one of a limited edition in custom colour. These models are built at the primary Hofner plant in Hagenau, Bavaria and are not always easy to find available for sale.
Club Bass
The Hofner 500/2 Club Bass Cavern spacing is a limited edition instrument based on the mid 1960’s hollow body single cutaway Club Bass, with ‘Cavern’ or ‘Close’ spacing pickups. The version seen here carries a ‘Relic’ vintage sunburst finish, and was shown at the 2019 NAMM extravaganza in Anaheim, California. This is a new instrument, delivering the look and tone of a vintage Club bass.

MORE →This new Hofner Club Bass offers a couple of special features. The top and back are nicely flamed, and the bass is finished in an amber shaded varnish. The pickups are placed in ‘Cavern Spacing’, meaning the neck and middle positions are used. While this seems counter intuitive, it’s done because in the bridge position, signal can be fairly weak, and those pickups are often not used. The middle position gets a much stronger signal from the strings.

MORE →Based on the Club guitar, the Hofner 500/2 Club Bass was introduced in 1965 and built to 1970. It was never as popular as its cousin the 500/1 violin or ‘Beatle Bass’, but its more traditional single cutaway guitar shape perhaps works a bit better without a strap.
