Here we’re looking at a brand new, just introduced Huss and Dalton CM model. It features an Engelmann Spruce top, Indian Rosewood for the sides and back, with Mahogany for the body blocks and neck. The head plate, bridge, and Maple-bound fingerboard are Ebony. Body binding is also Maple. Abalone is used for the rosette and 12th Fret Scroll inlay, and the Huss and Dalton log is Mother of Pearl.

This fantastic instrument is pre-sold, but we wanted to share it. It’s a brand new Gibson Clapton Firebird, number 100 of just 100 built to re-create Clapton’s 1964 Firebird I as used in Cream. Gibson introduced the Firebird in 1963, initially using neck-through construction – while the neck section is built of several sections of Mahogany separated by Walnut for stability, it extends the full length of the guitar.

MORE →Built at the now-closed Gibson Memphis Custom Shop, this gloss black CS Les Paul Custom dates to 2014 and has all the class and looks of the Custom. The Gibson Les Paul Custom was introduced for the 1954 model year as a ‘dressed up’ version of Gibson’s then-new Les Paul model. The black finish with white multi-ply binding were meant to suggest a tuxedo. At first, it was equipped with a P-90 at the bridge and a ‘Stape Top’ Alnico V pickup at the neck. More important, though, was the wood choice.

MORE →The Closet Classic Telecaster Pro follows the original Telecaster specifications, but not slavishly. The body is lightweight Ash, the neck is quartersawn Maple, as in the originals. But there are a number of improvements here, including having the truss rod adjuster at the headstock, a new bridge design with a split center saddle allowing better intonation, a 22 fret neck with large ‘6105’ fret wire and Twisted Tele pickups.

Import copies were getting better all the time, which was made very clear to Fender executives touring Japanese factories with a view to doing some production there. At this time, Fender also hired three executives from Yamaha.

MORE →The Huss and Dalton TD-M Custom is, as the name suggests, and buyer-customized version of the ‘Traditional Dreadnought-Mahogany’ model, in this case with Adirondack Spruce top and Sinker Mahogany back and sides. The ‘Traditional Dreadnought’ dates back to around 1911, when C F Martin built a number of large bodied guitars for the Ditson company. In 1931, with the need for ever-increasing volume, Martin re-launched the design with then now-classic ‘D’ series guitars. This design has been the basis for many other guitar models by many other builders.
