NO LONGER AVAILABLE!!! Martin D-35 Dreadnought Natural, 1971

The Martin D-35 Dreadnought first appeared in 1965, partly as a way to use the remaining stock of Brazilian Rosewood sections that were too small for a two-piece back. Drawing from the very successful D bodied Dreadnought, the Martin D-35 was placed between the venerable D-28 and more expensively decorated D-41 and D-45 models.

The Martin D-35 Dreadnought appeared in 1965 but made its catalog debut in 1966, and was a practical response to increasing demand for square-shouldered dreadnoughts.   Demand was so high for that specific body design that Gibson altered several round-shouldered models, including the iconic J-45 to the square-shouldered design.

The Martin D35, recognizable for its distinctive three-piece back, has been part of Martin’s standard lineup since its 1965 introduction. The design was generated for a practical reason – it allowed use of smaller sections of Rosewood that could not fit on a two-piece back as used on the D-28 or D-45. While the D28 and D35 share many construction features, the D35 can have a bit more tonal range and better developed low and high end response and balance.

Martin D-35 Dreadnought Steel String Guitar

Martin D-35 Dreadnought Steel String Guitar

Known for its strong bass response and power, the Martin D-35 is the workingman’s Dreadnought. It features a East Indian Rosewood three-piece back and a Sitka spruce top. The expressive quarter inch straight bracing gives this guitar its signature strong bass response and power, which has made it a popular choice for players such as Johnny Cash and Seth Avett. The mahogany neck has a bound ebony fingerboard and an easy playing modified low oval neck shape. It’s the guitar of choice for bluegrass and folk music. Perfect for the intermediate and advanced player.

The Martin D35 appeared in 1965 as builders adapted to changing Brazilian Rosewood supplies; the D35’s three piece back used panels too small for a two-piece back. By 1969, Martin had officially stopped use of Brazilian, though some occasionally appeared on D35’s as late as 1973, in favour of Indian Rosewood. Despite a false start – the earliest models had overly-braced backs that reduced volume – the Martin D35’s warm yet crisp tone rapidly gained popularity with bluegrass, country and folk guitarists, and singer-songwriters.
